Hávamál is an ancient medieval poem in which verses are attributed to the god Odin. Hávamál translates loosely as "Sayings of the High One". The work is one of the most well known and studied pieces of ancient Norse literature and contains lessons for the reader about hospitality, proper conduct, and wisdom as well as giving the reader a good glimpse into the philosophy of the Norse.
This quote is about how through time, everything will fade away. Your wealth and status, your family and friends, and eventually oneself will fade away too. However, your reputation on how you spent your life, especially if you spent it doing good, will live forever.
